Movies that Motivate Me

Stories are important. They help us know how to connect with others and ourselves. They inform how we view our culture and interpret history.

These are are films you may have seen and had extremely different reactions to, but my brain is weird, and this is what I took away and how it’s continued to impact my life.

Grosse Point Blank: Martin has gone through some really crazy stuff. He has a hard time knowing how to communicate appropriately with his peers. He is socially awkward. But he’s extremely good at his job and when his muscle memory kicks in, he can take care of business. I may not be a hired assassin (that you know of), but I still relate.

Gladiator: On what seemed like impossible days, my Freshman year of college, I would walk around campus thinking “If Maximus could ride from Germany to Spain with an injured leg and then make it to the Colosseum, you can do this.”

The Thin Red Line: World War II in the South Pacific. I can’t even begin to fathom what that experience could have been like. But the tenderness of mind in the characters portrayed in A Thin Red Line let me know that it was still okay to contemplate beauty, purpose, connection, purpose, and any other existential quandary while also engaged in a fight for your life.

Taxi Driver: I’ve had insomnia my whole life from some degree to another. Taxi Driver comforts me for two reasons, I am not alone in the strung out thoughts that start to form when you haven’t slept enough, and Lord willing, I will never make the same choices as Travis Bickle.

The Departed came out my senior year of college. I went to see it twice in the theater in one week because it was such a wonderful catharsis to watch. It’s a film about two organizations, two individuals in those organizations, and ultimately, every man for himself. Life is like that. We do our best to work in the system and with our community, and that is important and we need to continue to honor those commitments, but also, it’s our actions alone that define who we are and what we leave behind. Don’t lose your identity.

Apollo 13: When I was little, I watched the National Geographic documentary on the Titanic a few too many times. My greatest fear to this day still is floating cold and alone in the North Atlantic Ocean. So the premise of being lost in space was not my idea of a good time, and when my dad took me to see Apollo 13, I didn’t expect to like it that much. I got a huge drink and figured I’d take a bathroom break when I got bored or overwhelmed. I spent the next two hours enraptured and needing to pee. The gen, persistence, and teamwork that went into bringing the astronauts of that mission home is one of the most inspiring things possibly in our collective human history, and because of it, I’m less terrified of space then I am the ocean.

All About Eve: Margo is having a midlife crisis, and Eve isn’t helping anything, but she still looks amazing and stays pointedly and hilariously glib throughout. Cutting tact. I will never master it, but hearing it is always thrilling.

The Devil Wears Prada: While Miranda Priestly has many qualities I do not want to emulate, her singular drive and passion to make her brand the best over all, and her unflappable calm professionalism, is deeply inspiring.

Mad Max: Fury Road: You’ve got to fight for what you believe in. Fury Road is my kind of intense for a film, and the track I included in my Fall Momentum play list exemplifies that.. I love how it starts out with all these minor key strings submitting to the drums of war, but by the end the major key strings have come in and are now driving the drums. Hope wins. Hope always wins.
